S.M. Wolk Guitars is a one-man custom shop run by Luthier Steven Wolk in Las Vegas, NV. Steven makes highly rated pickups and accessories for guitars and basses while building a collection of complex boutique basses and guitars for sale. Steven specializes in Grateful Dead oriented gear and historically accurate instrument replicas to celebrate the work of luthiers, electronic wizards, tinkerers, and musicians. In addition to the Grateful Dead focus, Steven has also recreated a Tractor Bass reminiscent of Berry Oakley from The Allman Brothers, and a Frankenbass reminiscent of the musician Leland Sklar.

The WEIRed stuff:
Pepto Bob: This Pickguard aims to emulate the infamous “Pepto Pink” Modulus used by Bob Weir in the late 80’s. Seen with many different pickup arrangments, this guard particularly emulates one of the first we saw, with the three single coils all sitting next to each other. In place of the blade switch is three DPDT holes for pickup control, as well as only two control holes. Fully Also available in reverse.
Touch of Grey: This Pickguard is very similar to The BP with one key difference… This Guard emulates the through-body Blacknife seen in the Touch of Grey video made by Modulus. As described by Geoff Gould, founder of Modulus, in Grateful Dead Gear, this guard has a simple “split difference” setup. The bridge pickup is left alone, the middle pickup is left alone, and the neck pickup placed directly between the bridge and middle positions. The angle is then set at half the angle of the bridge pickup. Hence the “Split difference”. Control set up is identical to The BP. Also available in reverse.
Winterland Cowboy: This Pickguard emulates the Cowboy Special guitar used by Bob Weir and made by Ibanez. There are 4 versions of this pickguard, each one emulating different pickup arraignments of different times. Each is essentially a HSH, with variable locations for the single coil. Version 1 is a common version seen with the single coil slightly pushed towards the bridge pickup. Version 2 has another version with the single coil pushed as close as possible to the bridge. Both versions can be reversed.
Additionally, there are three holes for switches instead of a blade slot. This would be a setup for a passive system. Please contact if you have interest in a full active setup.
The Jerry Stuff:
Wolf Cub 73’: This Pickguard will help players emulate sounds from Jerry Garcia heard in The Grateful Dead Movie and much more. It has the single coil positions moved back slightly to be in the exact positions of Jerry Garcias Wolf guitar, built by Doug Irwin. These positions are a major part of the sound. One DPDT hole is added. This can also help accommodate a 24 fret conversion.
Winterland Wolf 78’ This Pickguard emulates Jerry Garcias Wolf guitar around 1978 in what is close to its final form. The pickups are arranged in a HHS format, with a slightly angled single coil in the neck position, as seen on the real Wolf. The pickups are located in the same positions as Wolf. It features added switch holes and comes with a large brass plate, allowing space for an OBEL and/or a buffer and battery in the output cavity. Does not come with a 12 foot long burning ember of Marijuana.

Berry Oakley REALLY knew what he was doing when he set his up. The sound is incredible.
The instrument that started everything for me. An Epiphone SG Pro. Added a middle pickup in 2011 using a flathead screwdriver, hammer, and drill. This was meant to be my Tiger before I knew what a scale length was.
Today, it has two Seymour Duncan Screamin Demons and a Seymour 59 PAF. All Pickups have 3 way switches for Single Coil/Parallel/Series. The fourth switch is a phase switch for the Neck Pickup to ensure the classic “3 pup SG’ sound is available. It has 3 independent volumes, 1 tone, and a Freeway Superswitch. The black switch was originally meant to be an on/off switch for a Waldotronics Buffer. That buffer was eventually moved into a pedal housing so I could use it with multiple instruments. But I have a feeling its going in the next big modification to my Strat..
Modified Epiphone ES-335 Pro. Added P90 in the middle position with 3 independent volumes and 1 tone. Features Freeway Ultra Switch for unlimited combinations.
Birdseye Maple Backplate for Stratocasters.
This is intended to be used for Alligator builds, but can be used for anything at all.
Birdseye Maple Control Plate and Switch Plate for the Rick Turner Designed and Built Peanut Guitar. This guitar is what you hear Jerry Garcia play on Skull and Roses.
S.M. Wolk Guitars Hand Built body that fits Fender Bass necks.Features gold aluminum Guard, Seymour Duncan Antiquity P Bass Pickups, Duncan Music Man Pickup, 2 volumes, and 1 tone. There is a switch for single coil selection on the Music Man Pickup.
The output is on the side of this bass to allow more room for controls.
Instrument finished in Candy Apple Red Nitrocellulose Lacquer.
